SoFi is a US financial app regulated by the SEC and FINRA that combines investing, banking and lending in one account. Its most valuable promotion is a direct-deposit cash bonus of $50 to $400 on SoFi Checking and Savings, scaled to how much you route in. SoFi Invest also runs an in-app claw game that awards a random free stock, though the advertised top figure is rare and most new investors receive only a few dollars.

What SoFi is and who stands behind it

SoFi started in the fall of 2011, founded by Stanford Graduate School of Business students who ran a $2 million pilot loan program for fellow students. It grew from student loan refinancing into a full financial app headquartered in San Francisco, and in January 2022 it cleared a bar most fintechs never reach: the OCC and Federal Reserve approved its applications to become a bank holding company operating SoFi Bank, N.A., a nationally chartered bank. Deposits at SoFi Bank are FDIC insured.

The investing side runs through SoFi Securities LLC, an SEC-registered broker-dealer and member of FINRA and SIPC. SIPC protection covers securities up to $500,000, including $250,000 for cash claims. The company is large and publicly traded on the Nasdaq. In its Q1 2026 earnings release SoFi reported 14.7 million members, up 35% year over year.

SoFi Invest, seen from a bonus claimant's chair

SoFi Invest covers self-directed trading in stocks, ETFs and options with no commissions, plus fractional shares, a $0 account minimum, IRAs and an automated portfolio run by SoFi Wealth. In November 2025 SoFi relaunched crypto trading through SoFi Bank, letting members buy, sell and hold coins including Bitcoin, Ethereum and Solana inside the same app. Crypto had been shut down in late 2023 as a condition of the bank charter, so this is a recent reversal worth knowing about.

Costs that matter to bonus hunters are mostly at the edges: a $25 inactivity fee applies after six months without a login, mutual fund purchases carry a small capped transaction fee, and margin balances accrue interest. If you open an account just to collect a promotion, set a reminder to log in periodically or close the account cleanly once any holding period ends.

How SoFi's bonuses actually work

The flagship offer is the direct deposit bonus on SoFi Checking and Savings. Under the terms running through December 31, 2026, you earn $50 if you receive $1,000 to $4,999.99 in eligible direct deposits, or $400 if you receive at least $5,000. The clock starts when SoFi recognizes your first eligible direct deposit of $1 or more, then it totals what arrives over the next 25 calendar days. The bonus lands in your checking account within 7 business days of qualifying. It is a one-time deal: only members who have never enrolled in direct deposit with SoFi are eligible.

On the invest side, SoFi runs match promotions in waves. An ongoing 1% IRA deposit match pays 1% on IRA contributions made from a SoFi bank account, up to your IRS contribution limit. Limited-window ACAT transfer matches also appear regularly, recently at 1% to 2% with caps between $50,000 and $100,000. All of these matches require the transferred or deposited funds to stay in the account for five years, or the bonus is clawed back through an early withdrawal fee. New self-directed accounts funded with at least $50 can also play the claw game, which awards $5 to $1,000 in free stock; the realistic outcome is a few dollars.

The referral program pays on the banking side. A referred friend gets $50 for opening SoFi Checking and Savings and depositing $50 or more, while the referrer gets $100 if they have an eligible direct deposit or a SoFi Plus membership. Referral bonuses credit within seven business days of validation.

Eligibility: US only

SoFi is built for the US market and its bonuses follow suit. To open a SoFi Invest account you must be 18 or older, hold a US Social Security number or ITIN, have a physical address in the 50 states, DC or a US military address, and be a US citizen, permanent resident or non-permanent resident on a supported visa. If you live outside the United States, none of these promotions are available to you.

What to check before you claim

Bonuses are taxable. SoFi's own terms state that bonuses are miscellaneous income and may be reported to the IRS on Form 1099-MISC, and the claw game files a 1099-MISC for rewards of $600 or more. Budget for the tax hit rather than treating the headline figure as take-home money.

The common disqualifiers are predictable. For the direct deposit bonus: having previously enrolled in direct deposit with SoFi, missing the $5,000 threshold inside the 25-day window, or closing the account before payout, since you must be open and in good standing when the bonus pays. For the invest matches: pulling funds before the five-year holding period ends. Promotion windows and amounts also change several times a year, so read the current terms page on sofi.com before you move money, not a months-old summary.

Frequently asked questions

How do I get the SoFi direct deposit bonus?

Open a SoFi Checking and Savings account and set up direct deposit for the first time. Once SoFi recognizes your first eligible direct deposit of $1 or more, it totals your direct deposits over the next 25 calendar days. You earn $50 for $1,000 to $4,999.99 in deposits or $400 for $5,000 or more, under the offer running through December 31, 2026.

Is the SoFi bonus taxable?

Yes. SoFi's terms state bonuses are miscellaneous income that may be reported to the IRS on Form 1099-MISC. The claw game promotion files a 1099-MISC for any reward worth $600 or more. You are responsible for taxes on what you receive.

How long does the SoFi bonus take to pay?

The direct deposit bonus pays into your SoFi Checking account within 7 business days of completing the requirements. Referral bonuses credit within seven business days of validation. Transfer match bonuses and claw game stock typically arrive within 5 to 10 business days.

Can I get a SoFi bonus if I live outside the US?

No. SoFi accounts require a US Social Security number or ITIN, a physical US address, and US citizen, permanent resident or supported visa status. There is no version of SoFi or its promotions for residents of other countries.

What is the catch with SoFi's invest match promotions?

The holding period. Matched IRA contributions and account transfers must stay in the account for five years, or the bonus is taken back through an early withdrawal fee. The transfer matches also run in short windows of a few weeks, so the exact percentage and cap depend on when you move your money.

Is the SoFi free stock claw game worth it?

It costs nothing beyond funding a new self-directed account with at least $50, so there is no real downside. But the prize ranges from $5 to $1,000 and most players receive an amount near the bottom of that range. Treat it as a small extra, not a reason to open the account.
