comdirect is a German online bank and broker founded in 1994 and, since a 2020 merger, a brand of Commerzbank AG, which holds a full German banking licence and is supervised by BaFin, the Deutsche Bundesbank and the European Central Bank. It suits investors living in Germany who want a securities depot, a current account and savings plans with one German bank. It is not built for people living abroad, and its standard order fees are well above those of the German app brokers.

Who comdirect is

comdirect started in 1994 in Quickborn, near Hamburg, as the direct bank of Commerzbank. In November 2020 Comdirect Bank AG was legally merged into Commerzbank AG, and comdirect has run as a Commerzbank brand ever since. Contracts are therefore with Commerzbank AG, one of Germany's largest banks.

The product range is that of a full bank rather than a trading app: the comdirect Depot (securities account) and a cheaper Pure Depot, the Girokonto current account, Tagesgeld savings, a Junior Depot for children, cominvest managed portfolios and savings plans on shares, ETFs and funds. In the depot you can trade shares, ETFs, funds, bonds, certificates and listed derivatives on German exchanges, through direct trading partners and on foreign exchanges.

Fees and accounts

New depot customers currently pay no depot fee for the first three years and, according to the comdirect depot page on 8 October 2026, a flat EUR 3.90 per order for 36 months. Third-party summaries say the flat rate applies to German exchanges and direct trading, and that exchange fees and third-party costs come on top. After that, the standard order fee at German exchanges is EUR 4.90 plus 0.25% of the order value, with a minimum of EUR 9.90 and a maximum of EUR 59.90.

Once the free period ends, the depot costs EUR 1.95 a month. It stays free in any quarter with at least two trades, a comdirect Girokonto or a savings plan execution. Savings plan executions cost 1.5% of the amount outside a list of roughly 500 ETFs that can be saved without an execution fee. Moving securities in from another bank is free.

How the depot opening bonus works

comdirect pays EUR 100 to new customers who open a comdirect Depot and agree, during the application, to receive marketing e-mails from Commerzbank AG. The campaign originally ran to 15 September 2026 and has been extended to 1 November 2026, the date by which the full application must reach comdirect. The money lands in the settlement account (Verrechnungskonto) about a week after the depot opens. The current wording asks for no deposit and no trades. You must keep the marketing consent until the bonus is paid, and can withdraw it afterwards.

comdirect advertises "up to EUR 150". The extra EUR 50 is an Early-Bird bonus tied to a state-subsidised pension depot (Altersvorsorgedepot) that has not launched yet; it would be paid only in May 2027 and only if that product goes live. The realistic figure is EUR 100.

The offer is open to adults resident in Germany who have not been comdirect customers in the 6 months before opening. The Pure Depot, asset-managed depots and accounts run by a financial services provider are excluded. comdirect pays no separate premium for transferring a depot in. The bonus counts as other income under section 22 no. 3 EStG and stays tax-free only while your total income of that kind is below EUR 256 in the calendar year.

Safety and who can join

As part of Commerzbank AG, comdirect operates under a full German banking licence. Commerzbank is supervised by BaFin and the Deutsche Bundesbank and, as a significant institution, directly by the European Central Bank. Cash deposits are covered up to EUR 100,000 per customer by the statutory Entschädigungseinrichtung deutscher Banken (EdB), and Commerzbank also belongs to the voluntary deposit protection fund of the Association of German Banks (BdB). Securities in the depot remain the customer's property and are held in custody, so they sit outside the bank's own assets.

comdirect is aimed at people living in Germany. Broker reports say it has stopped opening new accounts for most residents abroad and now refers non-residents to the Commerzbank brand, which requires a branch visit. US citizens and US taxpayers face restrictions on securities business.

Frequently asked questions

Does comdirect have a bonus?

Yes. New customers resident in Germany get EUR 100 for opening a comdirect Depot by 1 November 2026, provided they agree to marketing e-mails from Commerzbank AG and keep that consent until payout. The money arrives in the settlement account about a week after opening, with no deposit or trade requirement.

Is there a comdirect promo code?

No code is needed for the current offer. The EUR 100 is tied to opening the standard comdirect Depot and ticking the marketing consent in the application. The extra EUR 50 that makes up the advertised "up to EUR 150" depends on a pension depot that has not launched yet.

Is comdirect regulated and safe?

Yes. comdirect is a brand of Commerzbank AG, a German bank supervised by BaFin, the Deutsche Bundesbank and the ECB. Cash is protected up to EUR 100,000 by the statutory German scheme (EdB), with extra cover from the BdB voluntary fund, and securities in the depot remain your property.

Does comdirect pay a bonus for transferring a depot?

Not at the moment. Transferring securities in from another bank is free, but comdirect currently pays no separate transfer premium on top of the EUR 100 opening bonus.
