Checking availability…The catch
Rewards are credited as fractional shares to your Personal Portfolio within up to 10 business days after a qualifying purchase posts, and can be sold at any time with no holding or vesting period. However, your Personal Portfolio must be open and in good standing at the moment Stash initiates the credit; if it is closed or not in good standing for any reason, the stock rewards are forfeited with no compensation.
How to claim
- Open a Stash account with a Personal Portfolio and a Stash banking account (Starter from $3/month or Stash+ at $12/month)
- Activate your Stock-Back Card
- Make eligible purchases with the card
- Rewards are credited automatically as fractional shares to your Personal Portfolio within up to ten business days after the purchase posts
Full review
The Stock-Back Card is a debit card tied to a Stash banking account that pays rewards in fractional shares of stock instead of cash. When you buy from a publicly traded company, you get stock in that company; for other purchases the reward goes to a default investment you pick.
On the Stash+ plan ($12/month) you earn 1% back on the first $1,000 of purchases each calendar month, then 0.125% after that. On the lower Starter/Growth plan ($3/month) you earn a flat 0.125% on every swipe. The base reward is whichever is greater of 0.125% of the purchase or $0.01.
The catch is the headline "up to 3% back in stock." That rate only applies to occasional bonus offers at specific partner merchants, requires the Stash+ subscription, and the terms cap total bonus rewards at $10.00 of cash value per calendar month.
For ordinary spending the realistic rate is 1% (Stash+, capped at $1,000 monthly) or 0.125%. The reward is also funded by a paid subscription, so the value only comes out ahead if your stock rewards exceed the monthly fee.
Eligibility is US residents only, and you need an open Personal Portfolio brokerage account plus an open Stash banking account, both in good standing, with an active Stock-Back Card. Rewards are credited automatically (no promo code or claim step) within ten business days of a purchase posting.
ATM withdrawals, gift and prepaid cards, money orders, cash-equivalents, and peer-to-peer payments (Venmo, Cash App, PayPal) do not earn rewards. The awarded stock can be sold immediately with no holding period.
Pros
- +Rewards paid as real fractional shares of stock you can sell at any time
- +No holding or vesting period on awarded stock
- +Automatic, no promo code or manual claim
- +No overdraft, minimum balance, or monthly maintenance fees on the banking account
Cons
- −Requires a paid subscription ($3 or $12 per month) that can outweigh the rewards
- −Advertised 'up to 3%' applies only at bonus merchants and is capped at $10 of value per month
- −1% rate only covers the first $1,000 of monthly spend on Stash+, then drops to 0.125%
- −US residents only
- −Several common transaction types (ATM, gift cards, P2P) earn nothing
- −Net value can be negative: maxing the base 1% on Stash+ yields at most ~$120/year ($10/mo on the first $1,000 spend) versus the $144/year ($12/mo) Stash+ fee, so you must also capture bonus-merchant offers just to break even
