How bonus withdrawals actually work

The caps, sequences and clawback clauses that decide how much of a bonus you ever cash out.

Updated

Your balance is three pots, not one

Once a bonus is credited, your account holds three kinds of money: your own deposit, the bonus credit, and any profits you make. Brokers treat each pot differently, and the terms rarely spell this out in one place.

Your deposit is usually withdrawable at any time, though pulling it early can cancel the bonus. The bonus credit itself is often never withdrawable. Profits sit in between: they become yours after you meet the conditions, and sometimes only up to a cap.

Withdrawal caps

No-deposit offers almost always cap what you can take out, commonly a fixed multiple of the bonus or a flat amount. A $30 no-deposit bonus with a $100 profit cap means $100 is the most you will ever withdraw, no matter how well you trade.

Caps matter less on deposit bonuses, but check for them anyway. A cap buried in the terms turns an attractive percentage into a small fixed reward.

Clawbacks and the order of withdrawal

Many deposit bonuses shrink when you withdraw your own money early. A common clause removes bonus credit in proportion to the amount withdrawn, and some brokers also remove profits made with that credit.

If you might need your deposit back within the bonus period, read the clawback clause first. The flexibility you give up is part of the price of the bonus.

Verification comes before the payout

Brokers verify identity at withdrawal if they have not done it at sign-up. Expect to submit ID and proof of address, and expect the first withdrawal to be slower than the rest.

This is normal, but it is also where weak brokers stall. A regulated broker states its verification steps and processing times; treat vague or shifting requirements as a warning sign.

Before you claim, answer these

What exactly can I withdraw, and when? Is there a cap on profits? What happens to the bonus if I withdraw my deposit? What documents will the broker want, and how long does a payout take? If the published terms answer all four, the offer is worth considering. If they do not, assume the missing answer is unfavorable.
