The catch

Each monthly installment is withdrawable cash once received, and there is no holding period or Early Removal Fee. However, withdrawals or transfers out that exceed your Unmatched Balance permanently reduce the base for the remaining installments, even if you deposit again later, and closing the account stops all remaining payments. You only receive the full 1% if the assets stay at Public for all 60 months.

How to claim

  1. Open the Public app and go to Account, then Transfer to Public.
  2. Initiate an ACAT transfer of a brokerage account, an IRA transfer, or a 401(k) rollover on or after September 14, 2026.
  3. Let the transfer settle; most complete within 7 to 10 business days.
  4. The 1% match is paid in 60 equal monthly installments, the first about one month after the settlement date.
  5. Transfers of $5,000 or more also qualify for up to $100 in transfer-out fee reimbursement.

Full review

Public's ACATS & IRA Match Program pays a 1% cash match on the value of accounts moved to the platform: ACAT transfers into a Public brokerage account, trustee-to-trustee transfers into a Public IRA, and 401(k) rollovers.

There is no cap, so a $5,000 transfer earns $50 and a $5 million transfer earns $50,000. The match is calculated on transferred cash plus securities valued at the closing price on the settlement date. Public relaunched the program on September 14, 2026 with a new payout schedule: the match is paid in 60 equal monthly installments, the first about one month after the transfer settles, so a $10,000 transfer earns $100, paid at about $1.67 a month for five years.

According to its help center, Public also reimburses up to $100 per transfer in fees charged by the old broker when the transfer is worth $5,000 or more. The catch is how withdrawals are treated. The old five-year holding period and Early Removal Fee are gone, and payments you have already received are yours to keep.

But once withdrawals or transfers out exceed what the terms call your Unmatched Balance, the amount removed comes off the balance the match is based on, which permanently lowers the remaining monthly payments even if you deposit the money again later.

Closing the account stops all remaining payments. In practice you only collect the full 1% if the assets stay at Public for all 60 months. The offer period has no end date, and Public can end it at any time. The previous version of this offer, which paid the match as a single credit backed by a five-year Early Removal Fee, ended on May 31, 2026.

Pros

  • +Genuinely uncapped: 1% of any transfer size, paid as real cash rather than locked credit.
  • +Covers brokerage ACATs, IRA transfers, and 401(k) rollovers alike.
  • +Up to $100 in transfer-out fees reimbursed on transfers of $5,000 or more.
  • +No trading requirement, holding period or Early Removal Fee, and payments already received are yours to keep.

Cons

  • −Paid in 60 monthly installments, so collecting the full 1% takes five years.
  • −Withdrawals beyond your Unmatched Balance permanently cut the remaining payments, and closing the account stops them.
  • −U.S. residents only.
  • −Match treated as interest income for tax purposes, so it may generate a 1099.
