Topstep was founded in Chicago in 2012 as TopstepTrader and is run by CEO Michael Patak. It is a proprietary trading and funding program for CME Group futures (CME, CBOT, NYMEX and COMEX contracts, including micros), traded on its own platform, TopstepX. Clearing and technology run through Plus500US, according to October 2025 press reports.
The model works like this. You pay a monthly subscription for a Trading Combine, which is a simulated account. If you hit the profit target without breaking the risk rules, you earn an Express Funded Account, which is still simulated but pays real money out of simulated profits, with a profit split of up to 90% subject to payout caps. Some traders later move to a Live Funded account. You pay Topstep fees; you do not deposit trading capital with it.
Most traders do not pass. Topstep's own 2025 funnel data, as cited by review sites, put the share of Combines that reached the funded stage at about 17%. For most people the subscription is the cost of an attempt, and the fee keeps billing each month until you pass or cancel.
